Learn the art of canning and preserving!

Berry season is finally here and if you’re like most people in BC, it’s a much anticipated time. We love taking a day trip to the local berry farm with the kiddies or just heading down the street to the nearest blackberry patch. If you find yourself getting a bit squirrely thinking of ways to stockpile your berry goodness for the colder months, you’ve got a couple of options.  Of course, freezing is a great solution. Canning is another way to go, and has seen a remarkable revival over the past few years.  It seems there’s a resurgence in the art of canning and it’s no wonder why—canned foods taste amazing, make great gifts and are a nice option for those of us who are short on freezer space. If you'd like to explore the art of canning and preserving yourself,  we’ve put together this list of classes and workshops happening around the Lower Mainland and Victoria. Let us know if you have any to add!

 Vancouver:

The Vancouver Pastry School offers a two-day course in summer preserves, jams, marmalades, and jellies. The class runs July 17-18 and 24-25 and includes hands-on canning you can take home with you upon completion.

Fresh Choice Kitchens will be resuming their canning workshops this fall! Check their website later this summer to see the full calendar of upcoming Fall classes.

Victoria:

In Victoria, Chef David Mincey is offering an evening canning demonstration, Modern Canning and Preserves, at Cook Culture on July 12th and 26th (his first class on June 28th has sold out).

The Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre is also running an intensive canning workshop on September 14th, 2013 where participants will learn the basics of canning and prepare pickled roasted peppers.

Elsewhere in the province:

There is a good chance there is a canning workshop near you. Check out http://www.bernardin.ca for upcoming events, guides, video tutorials, and products.

Once you know the basics of canning, this just might be yet another fun and delicious way to bring the family together in the kitchen.  If you know of other canning workshops to add to this list or decide to explore one of these workshops, let us know here.

We'll leave you here with this cute video submitted into last year's Hands-on Cook-off contest, which shows you how to make Blackberry Jam at home! Enjoy.
